About Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study

The Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) is a renowned institution that began its work in October 2020. In a neo-Renaissance styled townhouse at Rothenbaumchaussee 45, HIAS offers outstanding researchersinnen and artistsinnen from around the world the opportunity to work on self-chosen projects in a creative and open atmosphere. Free from teaching and administrative obligations, up to 20 fellows per year can live and research in Hamburg for three to ten months.

    Key Products and Services

HIAS offers a unique fellowship program that allows fellows to deepen their research in an interdisciplinary environment. The fellows receive access to excellent working conditions, including private workspaces, IT support, and comprehensive library services. Furthermore, they are integrated into Hamburg's academic network and can participate in public events to present their research findings and engage in dialogue with society.

    Mission and Values

The main mission of HIAS is to create a space for intellectual freedom where researchersinnen and artistsinnen can pursue their projects without the usual professional obligations. HIAS places great value on interdisciplinarity, academic excellence, and the promotion of public discourse. The institution strives to create a diverse and stimulating community of fellows enriched by their different academic and artistic disciplines, countries of origin, and career stages.

    Sustainability Goals and Initiatives

HIAS promotes the sustainable internationalization of Hamburg as a research and science location. Through close collaboration with local academic institutions and the integration of fellows into Hamburg's professional communities, long-term collaborations are sought. This networking helps to strengthen Hamburg's position as an international science location and promote cultural diversity.

    Special Features

A special feature of HIAS is the close connection to the Hamburg public. In collaboration with the Körber Foundation, HIAS organizes the annual conference series "Hamburger Horizonte," which promotes the exchange between science and society. Additionally, each fellow is encouraged to plan and conduct a public event during their stay to intensify the dialogue with the citizens of Hamburg.

HIAS is a place of hospitality, international exchange, and cultural diversity. The institution not only offers excellent research conditions but also an inspiring environment enriched by the historical and cultural significance of the location.
