editAbout us
editThe Grüne Jugend (GJ) is the independent youth organization of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, founded on January 15, 1994, in Hanover. As an independent association, but in close relation to the party, the Grüne Jugend brings together young people who are committed to a just, ecological, and social society.
Mission and Values
editThe main mission of the Grüne Jugend is to provide a platform for young people to represent their political interests and demands in society and within the party. The organization is characterized by the values of anti-racism, left-liberalism, feminism, grassroots democracy, criticism of capitalism, eco-socialism, and anti-fascism. It strives for a good future for all people, free from climate destruction, exploitation, and injustice[3].
Thematic Focus
edit- Anti-fascism: The Grüne Jugend is firmly committed against right-wing tendencies and for the rights of minorities.
- Feminism and Queer: It fights for equality and the strengthening of the rights of the LSBTIQ* community.
- Ecology: A central concern is the ecological and sustainable management of the environment, including climate protection and support for movements like Fridays for Future.
- Justice: The organization demands equality before the law and in society, particularly regarding pay, the promotion of migrants, and the fight against poverty.
- Asylum: The right to asylum is defended, and it is demanded that climate change be recognized as a cause of flight and that integration be supported through investments in education and social programs[2].
Structure and Organization
editThe Grüne Jugend is divided into 16 state associations and numerous local associations. New members of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen who have not yet turned 28 automatically become members of the Grüne Jugend unless they object. Membership usually ends on the 28th birthday, with exceptions in some federal states that set the maximum age at 30 years[1].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe Grüne Jugend is deeply rooted in leftist movements, alliances, and civil society organizations. It actively advocates for environmental protection, social justice, and grassroots democracy. Through regular actions, demonstrations, and political self-education, the organization works to implement its visions of a better world. It is also part of the global network of the Global Young Greens, which advocates for similar goals[3][4].
Publications and Communication
editThe Grüne Jugend publishes the magazine "über:morgen," which appears twice a year as a print magazine and is also available digitally. Previously, there was the member newspaper "SPUNK," which was discontinued in 2019[1].
The Grüne Jugend is an independent, politically and socially relevant force that is characterized by its independent and critical stance and continuously works to change society towards a fairer and more sustainable future.
