GKV-Spitzenverband - Berlin

The GKV-Spitzenverband is the central representation of interests for statutory health and long-term care insurance funds in Germany. It was established as part of the health reform in 2007 and is, according to § 217a SGB V, the sole top association of statutory health insurance at the federal level. The association is headquartered in Berlin and is a corporation under public law.

The GKV-Spitzenverband supports the health insurance funds and their state associations in fulfilling their tasks and representing their interests. Its main tasks include shaping the framework conditions for competition in quality and cost-effectiveness in health and long-term care provision, as well as developing and standardizing electronic data exchange within the GKV. The association concludes contracts that apply to all health insurance funds and their state associations.

The main mission of the GKV-Spitzenverband is to promote the health of around 75 million insured individuals in Germany and to continuously improve the quality of health care provision. The association places great importance on the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of care and advocates for a uniform and high quality of preventive and health promotion services.

The GKV-Spitzenverband is also committed to sustainability. It supports health promotion and preventive services that not only promote people's health but also aim to protect the natural foundations of life. These initiatives are in line with the goals of the United Nations' Agenda 2030, particularly regarding health and well-being as well as climate protection measures.

Currently, the GKV-Spitzenverband is also engaged in the further development of hospice and palliative care, as this is seen as an urgent necessity. The association regularly publishes guidelines and recommendations to improve the quality of care and represent the interests of the insured.
