The
Foundations 20 (F20) - A Platform for Sustainable Development and Climate Protection
editAbout F20
editThe Foundations Platform F20 is a global network that has united more than 80 international foundations and philanthropic organizations from various parts of the world since 2017. Founded in the lead-up to the G20 summit in Hamburg, F20 aims to align the policies of G20 countries with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations[2][4].
Key Activities and Services
editF20 focuses on the climate policy of G20 countries and emphasizes the role that philanthropy can play in addressing the global climate crisis. This includes:
- Advocacy, Research, and Dialogue: F20 develops and publishes the F20 Recommendations annually, which contain specific demands to the G20 heads of state and government to respond to the global climate crisis. These recommendations include scaling up renewable energy, protecting biodiversity, and decarbonizing global financial markets[2].
- Networking and Dialogue Forums: Through events and networking activities, F20 creates spaces for effective discussions between civil society, the business and finance sector, think tanks, politics, and science. The goal is to find global, holistic, and cross-sectoral solutions to the most pressing global challenges[2][4].
Mission and Values
editThe main mission of F20 is to bridge the gap between civil society, the private sector, and the public sector to promote the implementation of sustainable development within the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Climate Agreement. F20 emphasizes the crucial role that non-state actors play in achieving these goals[1][5].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editF20 is engaged in various sustainability initiatives:
- Climate Protection and Decarbonization: F20 advocates for a just energy transition and the expansion of renewable energy to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This also includes shifting investments away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources[2][4].
- Biodiversity and Environmental Protection: F20 promotes the protection of biodiversity and the fight against environmental destruction, which has significant impacts on global health, food systems, and water supply[2].
- Carbon Offset: F20 offsets all CO2 emissions caused by travel activities through the Atmosfair program[1].
International Cooperation and Responsibility
editF20 emphasizes the need for a new level of international cooperation and transformative partnerships to tackle global challenges. The G20 countries, which account for about 80% of global emissions and represent two-thirds of the world's population, bear a special responsibility for implementing the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Climate Agreement[4].
Through its work and initiatives, F20 strives to play a central role in shaping a sustainable and climate-friendly future that leaves no one behind.
