FixMyCity develops open source software and digital tools that enable municipalities to implement the traffic transition together with citizens. A central project is FixMyBerlin, which supports the state of Berlin in implementing the Mobility Act that has been in effect since 2018. Digital online maps are used to visualize information on the safety and bicycle-friendliness of Berlin's bike paths, as well as data on the planning and expansion status of bicycle infrastructure. The Happy-Bike-Index categorizes the bicycle-friendliness of streets into four levels, from red (very poor) to green (super bicycle-friendly), and indicates where bicycle infrastructure projects are planned or implemented[2].

Other important initiatives include the Bicycle Rack Reporting Dialogue in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Aachen, the Berlin Street Check, as well as the establishment of Pop-Up Bike Lanes and temporary play streets, especially during the Corona crisis. The interactive maps make visible where there are still gaps in the nationwide network, where construction is currently taking place, and where it is stalled[2].

Challenges and Future Perspectives

The company faces challenges such as the lack of standardized data exchange formats, which has led to the need to develop its own standards. Another challenge is financing, as the company continues to seek partners for co-financing further projects. Despite these challenges, cities are gradually approaching FixMyCity to collaborate[2].

With the continuous development of online maps and the connection funding within the framework of the National Bicycle Traffic Plan, FixMyCity is working to implement its vision of sustainable and bicycle-friendly mobility and to support other municipalities in their own traffic transitions.
