editThe Europa-Union Deutschland (EUD) is the largest pro-European citizen initiative in Germany. Founded on December 9, 1946, in Syke, the EUD sees itself as a non-partisan, non-denominational, and independent political non-governmental organization that advocates for extensive European integration and a European federal state.
Mission and Values
editThe main mission of the EUD is to promote closer European integration and the creation of a citizen-oriented Europe, supported by a societal consensus. The EUD is active at local, regional, national, and European levels and unites representatives from all societal groups. The establishment of federal and democratic structures within Europe is part of the founding idea of the association[1].
Structure and Membership
editThe EUD has about 17,000 members organized in 16 state associations and over 300 district and local associations. Additionally, there are foreign associations in Brussels, Luxembourg, and Dublin. The youth organization of the EUD is called Junge Europäische Föderalisten Deutschland (JEF)[1].
Activities and Initiatives
editThe EUD organizes lectures, colloquia, weekend seminars, and study trips to European institutions to disseminate information about European integration. The association has previously advocated for important European reforms, such as the direct election of the European Parliament, the strengthening of its powers, the expansion of the European Union, the introduction of the Euro, and the abolition of roaming charges. The EUD also accompanied reform processes such as the failed constitutional treaty and the Treaty of Lisbon[1].
Sustainability and Goals
editA central goal of the EUD is to promote a Europe of citizens characterized by democratic and federal structures. The EUD advocates for the strengthening of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the democratic anchoring of political decision-making processes in the EU. Leadership and Committees
editThe presidency of the EUD, led by President Rainer Wieland, is responsible for implementing the resolutions of the federal congress and the federal committee and represents the EUD to third parties. Other important members of the presidency include the vice presidents, the treasurer, the chair of the federal committee, and the secretary general[5].
