MiMi Violence Prevention: With Migrants for Migrants

    About the Project

The project "MiMi Violence Prevention for Refugee Women, Children, and Migrant Women" is an initiative of the Ethno-Medizinisches Zentrum Berlin e.V. in close cooperation with the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg Villingen-Schwenningen (DHBW) and is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees, and Integration.

    Mission and Values

The main mission of MiMi Violence Prevention is to inform refugee women, children, and migrant women about forms of violence and protection options and to facilitate their access to support services. The project advocates for the self-determination and violence-free living of these target groups, regardless of linguistic or cultural barriers. The values of the project are based on respect, empowerment, and the utilization of the cultural and linguistic competence of migrants.

    Key Products and Services

    • Training and Mediation: MiMi mediators, both women and men, are trained in theory and practice to become transcultural mediators for violence prevention. These mediators conduct informational events in their native language and support refugee women and girls in understanding their rights and protection options[2][3][4].

    • Information Materials: The guide "Protection from Violence for Women in Germany" is available in 19 languages and provides comprehensive information on violence, causes, forms, consequences, and ways out of violence. Additionally, addresses of support services are provided[5].

    • Network Building and Support: The project promotes the establishment of local networks of professionals and volunteers. The mediators are supported through regular supervision and training[2][3].

    Sustainability Goals and Initiatives

    • Nationwide Reach: Since the project started in 2016, nearly 500 MiMi mediators in eleven federal states have informed around 15,000 people about violence prevention and distributed over 40,000 copies of the guides[2][3].

    • Dynamic Adaptation: The content and methods of the project are continuously adapted to the needs of the target groups, based on feedback from the mediators and scientific evaluation results[2][3].

    • European Recognition: The MiMi project received the European Health Award in 2015 for its successful integration technology in health promotion and has since expanded into the field of violence prevention in 2016[2][3].

    Overall Goal

The goal of MiMi Violence Prevention is that every woman and girl in Germany has equal access to protection and all services to enable them to lead a self-determined and violence-free life. Through close cooperation with migrants and the utilization of their cultural and linguistic competence, effective and culturally sensitive violence prevention is ensured.
