editThe Erzbistum has a rich history that dates back to 739 when the Diocese of Freising was founded. It developed into a cultural center of Old Bavaria and was reorganized in 1821 by Pope Pius VII. From 1977 to 1982, it was led by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the later Pope Benedict XVI. Since 2008, Cardinal Reinhard Marx has been at the head of the Erzbistum.
