Digital Freedom Fund

The Digital Freedom Fund (DFF) is an organization that has been advocating for the promotion and protection of human rights in digital spaces in Europe since 2017. The main mission of the DFF is to minimize the negative impacts of technology and ensure that society enjoys the same fundamental rights online as offline[1][3][4].

The DFF supports strategic litigation through financial funding and promotes collaboration among digital rights activists. The organization focuses on three main areas:

• Litigation Track Support: Financial support for litigation that advances digital rights.
• Pre-Litigation Research: Support for pre-litigation research projects to lay the groundwork for future litigation.
• Post-Litigation Activities: Starting in 2024, the DFF will also provide support for activities after the conclusion of litigation to ensure the sustainability of the achieved results[1][3][5].

The DFF organizes events, workshops, and meetings to strengthen the capacities of the community of organizations and individuals engaged in digital rights. These initiatives aim to raise awareness of the potential application of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in the defense and protection of digital rights and to expand the capacities of various stakeholders[1][5].

The DFF pursues an intersectional approach to combat social hierarchies and discrimination in the digital world. An important aspect of this work is the decolonization of digital rights, which is advanced through participatory processes and thematic workshops. These initiatives aim to promote digital solidarity and combat inequalities. In spring 2024, the DFF launched the Weaving Liberation Initiative to continue this process in a more formalized manner[4].

The DFF is guided by decolonial and anti-oppressive principles. The organization engages in a consultative dialogue process with stakeholders who are committed to promoting digital rights in Europe. The annual strategy day of the DFF brings together a broad group of organizations and individuals to strategize together, share information and lessons, and coordinate future work[1].
