The
Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung (DAM)
editAbout Us
editThe Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung (DAM) is an innovative alliance, founded in 2019 by the federal government and the five northern German states of Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The headquarters of DAM is located in Berlin.
Mission and Values
editThe DAM is committed to promoting sustainable management of coasts, seas, and oceans through comprehensive research, data management, digitalization, and the coordination of infrastructures. Its mission includes strengthening German marine research to enable science-based decisions for the protection and sustainable use of marine areas[2][3].
Key Products and Services
edit- Research: The DAM develops and coordinates solution-oriented research missions on socially relevant issues. Currently, it focuses on two main research missions aimed at the protection and sustainable use of marine areas[2][3].
- Data Management and Digitalization: The DAM works on improving data management and digitalization to utilize and share research results more efficiently.
- Coordination of Infrastructures: It coordinates the existing infrastructures of marine research institutions to achieve better networking and efficiency.
- Knowledge Transfer: The DAM conveys options for action and solution-oriented knowledge to politics, business, and civil society to support political and societal decision-making processes[1][2][3].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe DAM aims to address international and national challenges in marine research. These include:
- Protection and Sustainable Use: The DAM works to develop and evaluate concepts for the sustainable use of marine resources and services, as well as the protection of ecosystems and the preservation of biodiversity[3].
- Climate Protection: Through research and the protection of seas and oceans, which have a significant impact on the climate, the DAM contributes to climate protection and the reduction of CO₂ emissions[1].
- International Cooperation: The DAM strengthens the international effectiveness and visibility of German marine research by developing interfaces and collaborations between non-university research institutions and universities[3].
Members and Partnerships
editThe DAM currently connects 25 university and non-university institutions engaged in marine research. Additionally, the DAM cooperates with strategic partners to strengthen the sustainable management of coasts, seas, and oceans[4].
The Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung is thus a central player in German and international marine research, making a significant contribution to sustainability and the protection of the seas through its comprehensive activities and initiatives.
