    About Decolonize Berlin e.V.

Decolonize Berlin e.V. is a committed association that engages in critical examination of the history and present of colonialism and racism. The association advocates for the recognition and redress of colonial injustices and strives for a comprehensive decolonization of society. Founded in 2019, Decolonize Berlin emerged from a civil society network of Black, diasporic, postcolonial, and development policy groups in Berlin. This alliance is supported by over 100 dedicated individuals.

    Main Mission and Values

The main mission of Decolonize Berlin e.V. is to critically question and address Berlin's colonial past and its impacts on today's society. The association promotes the recognition of colonial injustices and advocates for a just and inclusive society. The values of the association are based on solidarity, justice, and the promotion of diversity and inclusion.

    Key Projects and Services

Decolonize Berlin e.V. works closely with civil society organizations, administration, and politics to develop a comprehensive concept for societal engagement with the colonial past. A central project is the coordination office for the city-wide process of addressing Berlin's colonial past, which has been based at the association since May 2020. This coordination office has developed a concept in collaboration with various stakeholders, which was adopted by the Berlin Senate in spring 2023.

    Sustainability Goals and Initiatives

The association advocates for sustainable decolonization processes that affect all areas of society. This includes initiatives for the decolonization of education, science, art, and culture, as well as the promotion of anti-discrimination. Decolonize Berlin e.V. emphasizes the necessity of involving Black and migrant researchers and practitioners in these processes. The association is also committed to renaming discriminatory street names and promoting a decolonial culture of remembrance in the city.

    Outlook

Decolonize Berlin e.V. plans to continue the dialogue between civil society, administration, and politics to implement the developed demands into practical activities. The association will continue to emphasize Berlin's responsibility as a former colonial metropolis and expects that the process of decolonial redress will remain of great importance in the coming years. Decolonize Berlin e.V. thanks all activists and experts for their support and looks forward to further collaboration and networks.
