BürgerStiftung Hamburg

The BürgerStiftung Hamburg is a community foundation that was established in 1999 by Hamburg residents for their city. It thrives on the idea of civic engagement and aims to promote participation in societal tasks.

The main mission of the BürgerStiftung Hamburg is to strengthen cohesion, engagement, and sustainability in Hamburg. • Thematic Funds: The foundation has established various thematic funds that focus on specific aspects of the Hamburg funding landscape, such as supporting artists, nature, environmental and animal protection, as well as elderly care and public health[1].
• Trust Foundations: The BürgerStiftung Hamburg manages 15 trust foundations with a foundation capital of 13.2 million euros, which increases its total capital to 75.2 million euros[1].

The foundation advocates for sustainable urban development and focuses on long-term funding. This includes:

• Environmental and Nature Conservation: Through specific endowments, such as the Helga Groth Endowment and the Jens Steineke Endowment, projects in the areas of nature, environmental, and animal protection as well as youth environmental education are supported[1].
• Social Projects: A focus is on promoting children and youth projects in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods to strengthen social cohesion[1].

The BürgerStiftung Hamburg is supported by the commitment of more than 350 volunteers, a full-time team of 25 employees, and numerous donors and sponsors. Everyone can participate in the foundation's work, whether by contributing time and expertise or through donations[2].
