BürgerBegehren Klimaschutz e.V. (BBK) is a non-profit association, founded in 2008, with the aim of promoting climate protection measures nationwide through citizen participation and direct democracy. Under the motto "Make the Climate Transition Yourself," BBK focuses on the engagement of local people to realize climate-friendly municipal policies.

• Consultation and Support: BBK advises and supports local initiatives and municipalities in using direct democratic tools such as citizen petitions, referendums, and randomly selected citizen councils to implement climate-friendly policies.
• Education and Knowledge Transfer: Through workshops, studies, publications, and seminar series, BBK provides expertise free of charge to prepare important aspects of the climate transition and strengthen local initiatives.
• Campaigns and Projects: BBK initiates and supports various campaigns, such as "Klimabegehren Flensburg," "Hannover erneuerbar," "Klimawende Köln," and the "Potential Study Climate-Neutral Heat Supply Berlin 2035."

BBK's mission is to bring democracy and climate protection together. The association is committed to achieving the limitation of global warming to 1.5 degrees and adhering to the Paris Climate Agreement. BBK works across party and organizational lines, free of charge and without bureaucracy, to promote a solidarity-based and democratic community and support diverse participation opportunities in political decision-making processes.

• Local Participation: BBK encourages and accompanies local initiatives in utilizing their co-determination opportunities to implement climate-friendly municipal policies.
• Citizen Councils: The association played a key role in organizing the first nationwide Citizen Council on Climate, which, under the patronage of former Federal President Horst Köhler, developed recommendations for national climate policy[3][4].
• Municipal Consultation: BBK advises municipal politics and administration on issues of citizen participation and municipal climate protection.
• Funding: BBK's work is financed through foundation grants and donations.

• Make the Heat Transition Yourself: A campaign focused on decentralized and climate-friendly heat supply.
• Petition "District Heating Back in Berlin's Hands": An initiative for the repurchase of the district heating network from Vattenfall, which collected over 15,000 signatures.
• Bottom-Up Climate Transition Conference: A nationwide meeting of climate campaigns, organized together with the Munich Environmental Institute[2].
