BODAN Großhandel für Naturkost GmbH is a leading organic wholesaler based in Überlingen on Lake Constance. For over 35 years, we have been supplying independent farm and organic food stores in southern Germany and Vorarlberg with a comprehensive range of organic products.

All our goods are organic certified, preferably according to the standards of Demeter, Bioland, and Naturland, and are sourced primarily from the Lake Constance region[1][3][5].

Our goal is to collaboratively shape sustainable value creation cycles and connect actors from field to plate. We are committed to strengthening organic farming, fertile soils, biodiversity, and a healthy environment[1][3].

Sustainability Goals and Initiatives

BODAN is a pioneer in sustainability. We have set ourselves the ambitious goal of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of our fleet to zero. Our fleet consists of modern, ecologically advantageous vehicles, including trucks with gas-to-liquid fuels, compressed or liquefied natural gas, and e-hybrid trucks[1].

Our company is EMAS certified and has been regularly publishing a common good balance sheet since 2011. We refrain from using fossil fuels in our buildings and utilize waste heat from our cooling systems for heating, air conditioning, and hot water. The electricity comes 100 percent from an Austrian hydroelectric power plant. Additionally, we use rainwater for irrigating our green areas and cleaning our trucks[1].

Food waste is avoided through the utilization of unsold food via food banks, provision for employees, or use for biogas production[1].

Team and Structure

At BODAN, around 200 people from over 20 different countries work, aged from 17 to 74 years. Our team includes professionals from various fields, from drivers and merchants to IT experts, oenologists, nutritional scientists, chefs, and farmers. This diversity makes us strong[2].

The management consists of Volker Schwarz and Sascha Damaschun, supported by an experienced leadership team made up of Iris Koch, Jan Pfäffle, and Steffen Wolf[2].

Current Engagements

BODAN is actively engaged in various initiatives and projects, such as the Strategy Dialogue Agriculture, which aims to sustainably shape agriculture in Baden-Württemberg and strengthen biodiversity. We have signed the 'Social Contract for the Future of Agriculture and Biodiversity in Baden-Württemberg' and are committed to regional value chains and the promotion of educational and consulting services[3].

Furthermore, we have been nominated for the German Sustainability Award in the wholesale category and have made it to the finals, highlighting our continuous efforts towards sustainability[3].
