Berliner Mieterverein e.V.
editAbout Us
editThe Berliner Mieterverein e.V. (BMV) is one of the oldest and largest advocacy groups for tenants in Germany. Founded in 1888, the association has been advocating for the rights and interests of tenants in Berlin for over 135 years.
Mission and Values
editOur main mission is to secure good and affordable housing for all. We advocate for a social and fair housing and rental policy and work to protect tenants from legal disadvantages. Our actions are characterized by the values of fairness, honesty, openness, willingness to perform, responsibility, and creativity. These values are the foundation of our work and make us credible in our commitment and goals[1][3].
Services and Products
editThe BMV offers its members comprehensive advice and support on all rental law issues. This includes personal consultations, correspondence with landlords, legal protection for court proceedings, and regular information on tenant and housing topics. Annually, we conduct about 85,000 consultations and also act as mediators in disputes between tenants and neighbors or roommates[3].
Organization and Membership
editWith over 190,000 members, the BMV is the largest tenant association in Germany. As a state association of Berlin, we are a member of the German Tenants' Association (DMB) and work closely with other tenant associations and consumer organizations. Our members benefit from free consultations, affordable out-of-court representation, and the opportunity to take out a discounted legal protection insurance[3][4].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe BMV is actively engaged in housing policy and advocates for sustainable and social solutions in the housing sector. We support initiatives such as the citizens' initiative "Bauwende ökologisch & sozial," which aims to secure the stock of affordable housing and promote only ecologically compatible new construction. Additionally, we demand a mandatory social housing quota for all housing construction companies to alleviate the housing shortage in cities[5].
Current Issues and Engagement
editWe are engaged in various current debates and projects, such as the criticism of the "Schneller-Bauen-Gesetz" of the Berlin Senate, which aims to accelerate housing construction but also poses risks for local participation and environmental and heritage protection. Furthermore, we discuss infill development in Berlin settlements and its ecological and social impacts. The BMV is also part of events and panel discussions that address contemporary housing forms, architectural and urban planning solutions, as well as the energy transition and climate protection measures[5].
International and National Cooperation
editIn addition to our local work, we are also active internationally as a member of the International Union of Tenants and work towards making housing a human right. At the national level, we cooperate closely with the German Tenants' Association and other consumer organizations to represent the interests of tenants in the legislative process[1][3].
The Berliner Mieterverein e.V. is an indispensable partner for all tenants in Berlin who want to advocate for their rights and for affordable housing. With our many years of experience and our comprehensive service offerings, we are the ideal contact for all rental law questions and challenges.
