Bellona

Bellona is an international, non-profit environmental and climate protection organization founded in 1986 in Oslo. With an office in Berlin since 2021, Bellona Germany focuses particularly on climate protection in industry.

The mission of Bellona is to achieve a restorative, CO2-negative society through a just and democratic transformation. Bellona is committed to overcoming barriers between different policy and climate protection areas and ensuring that decisions are made with a clear understanding of their overall impacts. This is achieved through the use of science-based and systemic thinking[1][2].

Bellona works closely with civil society, science, politics, and industry to develop and implement credible and effective climate solutions. This collaboration involves the participation of various stakeholders, including trade unions, scientists, industry representatives, and politicians, to jointly address the necessary transformations and initiate crucial climate protection measures[1][2].

A central goal of Bellona is the expansion and establishment of infrastructures that are essential for climate protection. This includes the expansion of networks for the electrification of heat and transport, the repurposing of existing gas networks, and the development of a CO2 and hydrogen infrastructure. Bellona emphasizes the need for clear and swift decisions within democracies to mitigate climate change and adapt to the already unavoidable consequences[1].

Bellona Europe actively works on key issues such as energy systems, the provision of climate infrastructure, green public procurement, CO2 accounting, and sustainable economic policies. In June 2024, Bellona Europe presented a four-year roadmap highlighting three critical areas that must be prioritized to achieve climate neutrality: the provision of essential climate infrastructure, ensuring science-based policy-making, and developing efficient markets for a net-zero emissions world[2].

Bellona was present at the Paris climate negotiations and has significantly contributed to various EU directives and initiatives, such as the Offshore Safety Directive following the Deepwater Horizon disaster and lobbying for a ban on heavy fuel oil on ships in the Arctic. Additionally, Bellona was a founding member of the Zero Emission Platform (ZEP) and has significantly contributed to the development of emission-free, climate-friendly industry and technologies in Europe[2].

Bellona advocates for access to information and broad public participation to enable societal consensus. This also includes uncovering and debunking hype and greenwashing to ensure that climate protection measures are authentic and effective[1][2].
