Albert-Schweitzer-Kinderdorf Berlin
The
Albert-Schweitzer-Kinderdorf Berlin e.V.
editAbout Us
editThe Albert-Schweitzer-Kinderdorf Berlin e.V. is an independent provider of child and youth welfare, founded in 1960 as the second Albert-Schweitzer-Kinderdorf in Germany. The foundation of our work is the idea of caring for and educating children and adolescents who cannot grow up in their families of origin in family-like communities, a concept that was explicitly supported by our namesake Albert Schweitzer.
Key Products and Services
edit- Children's Village: In our 19 children's village family groups, up to six children and adolescents live together, coming from serious family problems. These groups provide a stable and family-like environment[2][3].
- Daycare Centers: Two daycare centers in Lichtenberg, connected to family centers, offer space for a total of 265 children from eight weeks old and serve as central contact points for families in the neighborhood[2][3].
- Family Centers: The family centers "Die Brücke" and "Kikiflo" in Lichtenberg provide space for encounters, exchange, information, and counseling[2][3].
- Educational Homes: Intensive educational support, where one to two children are cared for by social education professionals in their private homes[2][3].
- Living Groups: In addition to the children's village families, we operate living groups as part of residential youth welfare, e.g., in Gatow[2][3].
- Family House: Since 2017, the Spandau Family House has offered families in crisis situations the opportunity to live together as a family while working on crucial changes to ensure the welfare of the child[2][3].
Mission and Values
editOur work is characterized by the Christian-humanistic values of Albert Schweitzer, particularly his lived humanity and his consistent advocacy for all life. Our goal is to allow children and adolescents to grow up in a safe and supportive environment and to give them the opportunity to shape their own future. We are committed to preserving proven methods and proactively addressing new challenges to meet the needs of children and families[2].
Sustainability Goals and Initiatives
editThe association has continuously expanded its services to provide family-supporting and promoting offerings. Since 2005, the children's village has operated daycare centers and family centers in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The Spandau Family House, opened in 2017, offers an innovative solution for families in crisis situations. Through close cooperation with other organizations, such as the PARITÄTischen Berlin and the Association of Albert Schweitzer Children's Villages and Family Works, we are working nationwide to increase the visibility of our work and gain further supporters[2][3].
Organization and Structure
editThe Albert-Schweitzer-Kinderdorf Berlin e.V. is led by a voluntary board, supported by the board of trustees and full-time employees. The administrative structure includes two offices and is a member of the PARITÄTischen Berlin, which promotes professional exchange and advocacy for our work[2].
