    Join the most northern university of applied sciences in Germany

    Approximately 3,200 students are enrolled in 22 degree programmes at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (FUAS). At FUAS we research and teach in state-of-the-art laboratories and lecture halls located on a spacious and green campus. Flensburg’s maritime flair and its location right at the Baltic Sea make it a great place to live.

    As of March 1, 2026, the following full-time position is to be filled in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, and Maritime Technologies:

    W2-Professorship for Sustainable Product Development and Design Methods (all genders)

    Your responsibilities:

    • Teaching in the areas of product development, design methodology, and technical drawing, primarily within engineering programmes at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level
    • Gradually assuming leadership of the FabLab (IDEENREICH), a makerspace dedicated to teaching, technical start-up support, and serving as an extracurricular learning hub for the region
    • Developing and enhancing study formats and programmes in collaboration with fellow members of staff
    • Conducting applied research, with an increasing focus on interdisciplinary teams comprising experts from engineering, computer science, and business
    • Facilitating knowledge transfer to the region and cooperating with regional and national stakeholders, including schools and partners from business development and industry
    • Actively participating in our university's academic self-governance

    Your qualifications and experience:

    • A successfully completed degree, including a doctorate, in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
    • Strong expertise in mechanical engineering with a specialization in product development and design methods, ideally enhanced by a focus on sustainability and environmental protection
    • Advanced proficiency in design methods, CAD (Computer-Aided Design), and technical drawing
    • Willingness to teach foundational courses in our engineering programmes
    • Proven industry experience, complemented by research competencies and a solid understanding of interdisciplinary teamwork.
    • Leadership experience with the ability to guide teams in a cooperative and collegial manner
    • A “maker mindset” characterized by creativity, innovation, and the ability to apply creative methods while inspiring students
    • A passion for teaching, high motivation, and the capability to deliver practical and engaging course content in both German and English

    Additional qualification that would be desirable:

    • Experience in application-oriented research and development projects
    • Experience in national and international committee work
    • Higher education teaching qualifications or a willingness to obtain them
    • Intercultural experience, i.e. through having spent time abroad

    In addition to the general employment requirements according to civil service law, the applicant will have to fulfil the following criteria in accordance with §61 of the Schleswig-Holstein Higher Education Act [HSG]: successfully completed postgraduate degree, pedagogical and didactic aptitude, particular competence in academic work which is typically demonstrated by the good quality of the doctorate. Further requirements are: special achievements in the application or development of scientific findings and methods as part of a minimum of five years of work experience, three of which must have been completed outside a university environment.     The initial appointment is for a two-year fixed term as a civil servant. Upon successful demonstration of pedagogical aptitude, tenure as a professor in a permanent civil servant position is intended. Performance-based salary increases are possible based on merit.
