The Department of Fish Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture led by Prof. Dr. Jens Krause at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB, www.igb-berlin.de) in Berlin invites applications for a tenure track group leader position in Fish Ecophysiology. The new group leader is expected to start a research program on organismal fish ecophysiology with a focus on the physiological mechanisms that enable fish to survive, grow, reproduce, and thrive in different habitats, ranging from freshwater streams to rivers and lakes and to adapt to changes in their environment. This position fits in the strategic development of IGB to empower its capacity for predictive ecology, through an improved understanding of the structure and functioning of freshwater systems, informing projections on future scenarios and its implications for the distribution and abundance of organisms, and for using mechanistic insights to optimize management and conservation of freshwater fish populations.
Your role
- Establish an independent research group in fish ecophysiology, for example in relation to bioenergetics, sensory ecology, thermal tolerance, osmoregulatory and other hormonal regulation, or stress physiology, preferably at the organismal level.
- Design and conduct experiments in laboratory settings, ponds, lakes and rivers to investigate physiological responses to environmental change.
- Use the physiological insights to advance our understanding of fish biology and ecology and to translate mechanistic insights into species distributions or responses to environmental stressors or management.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.
- Collaborate with colleagues within IGB and participate in interdisciplinary research projects.
Your profile
- Ph.D. in biology, ecology, physiology, or a related field, with a specialization in fish ecophysiology.
- Proficiency in relevant laboratory techniques, such as respirometry, biochemical assays, and other physiological measurements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a research team.
- Strong background in experimental design and data analysis.
- Strong conceptual background in freshwater ecology and fish biology.
- Excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with career stage
- Experience in supervising students or early career researchers is of advantage
- Success in competitive funding acquisition commensurate with career stage
