Research Scientist / Research Software Engineer - High Performance Computing (HPC)

Creating most exact predictions with AI, simulating largest climate models or tiniest elementary particles: Supercomputers are essential for solving the grand scientific challenges of our time. The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most advanced supercomputing infrastructures for scientific applications in Europe and makes it available for research purposes to scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich, in Germany, and throughout Europe. The “Accelerating Devices Lab” of JSC bundles expertise related to efficient, parallel compute accelerators working tightly together with domain scientists and hardware creators. A new, European-funded project is DARE, which develops an open HPC ecosystem revolving around the RISC-V architecture, including three HPC processors.

    Your Job:

Within the Accelerating Devices Lab, you will work on the DARE project to create performance-critical software for novel RISC-V processors, which are developed within the project.

    • You support the creation of a full HPC software ecosystem for RISC-V, for example by using EasyBuild and Kokkos
    • Together with your colleagues, you port and optimize BLAS and FFT libraries close to the hardware and in close collaboration with processor developers and selected applications (co-design) to jump-start a sovereign RISC-V HPC infrastructure in Europe
    • Beyond your main duties, you support the enablement work on JUPITER, the exascale supercomputer at JSC, to place first applications on the system successfully and gain first-hand experience with accelerator-using programs
    • You support the coordination with the international project partners in a closely collaborating local RISC-V team
    • At scientific meetings, conferences, and in scientific papers you present the results of your work

    Your Profile:

You are an excellent team player and a curious researcher, knowledgeable within the field of HPC, for example with GPU-accelerated HPC systems or RISC-V processors. You know how to tackle complex application workloads and how to map application features to hardware properties. More specifically, your profile is:

    • Master degree, preferably with subsequent PhD degree, in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or similar fields
    • Self-motivated personality with very good command of written/spoken English
    • Comprehensive experience using HPC systems as well as parallel/distributed computing with CPUs and GPUs or similar accelerators
    • Programming and modern software engineering skills in C/C++ or Python
    • A track record of your work in code repositories (Open Source), scientific workshops, conferences, and other publications
    • Used to work in a multidisciplinary team and environment solving scientifically challenging problems on large computers.

You don’t need to check all the boxes above to apply to this position. In the end, your scientific curiosity, self-motivation, and team-spirit are most important to us.

    Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! Here is what Forschungszentrum Jülich can offer you:

    • Access to cutting-edge and unique supercomputing systems including large-scale GPU installations and Quantum Computers
    • Comprehensive training courses and individual opportunities for personal and professional further development
    • Extensive company health management
    • Ideal conditions for balancing work and private life, as well as a family-friendly corporate policy
    • Flexible work (location) arrangements, e.g. remote work
    • Flexible working hours in a full-time position (39 hours/week) with the option of slightly reduced working hours
    • 30 days of annual leave and provision for days off between public holidays and weekends (e.g. between Christmas and New Year)
In addition to exciting tasks and a collaborative working atmosphere at Jülich, we have a lot more to offer: https://go.fzj.de/benefits
You will be initially employed for a fixed term of 2 years but with the prospect of longer-term employment. Salary and social security benefits will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund), pay group 13, depending on your current qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks assigned to you. All information about the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) can be found on the BMI website: https://go.fzj.de/bmi.tvoed The monthly salaries in euros can be found on page 66 of the PDF download.
We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds, e.g. in terms of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation / identity, and social, ethnic and religious origin. A diverse and inclusive working environment with equal opportunities in which everyone can realize their potential is important to us.

We look forward to receiving your application. The job will be advertised until the position has been successfully filled. You should therefore submit your application as soon as possible.
