Job description
The Institute of Geosciences at Kiel University is offering a research position in the Geohydromodelling research group:
Research Associate (M, F, D)
within the GeoDT project starting at the earliest possible date.
The position is available immediately and is limited until 31.12.2027. The salary, subject to the tariff conditions, corresponds to remuneration group 13 TV-L. The position is a full-time employment, currently 38.7 hours per week.
The Geohydromodelling research group focuses on the numerical simulation of flow and transport processes in single and multiphase flow systems in the geological subsurface. Applications include geothermal energy, heat and energy storage, carbon capture and storage and groundwater utilization. For this purpose, the necessary numerical simulation codes are developed and applied to address practical research questions in applied settings.
The offered position is part of the third-party funded project „Digital Twin Deep Geothermal Energy” (Acronym: GeoDT), financed by the federal Ministry for Education and Research. Within this project, a Digital Twin for the use of deep geothermal energy is to be developed together with project partners at several locations in Germany. To this end, the required data is collected and compiled on the basis of a study site and transferred to the Digital Twin. This will then be used for corresponding deep geothermal energy applications.
Your task will be to compile the required thermal, hydraulic and geological data and combine this data in a conceptual model of the study site. The data should then be transferred to the Digital Twin using specific routines in order to be stored there consistently with the site geometry. Secondly, as the first use of the Digital Twin, you will determine the geothermal-geohydraulic actual state of the reference site, also transfer the result back to the Digital Twin, and thus evaluate the possible applications of deep geothermal energy at the investigation site.
Requirements
• You are interested in the outlined scientific questions and the use of modern numerical simulation programs
• You have an M.Sc. degree in geosciences, physics, geophysics, mathematics, engineering or a comparable course of study
• You have basic knowledge of natural sciences and mathematics
Desirable
• You have already gained experience in the use of numerical simulation programs for heat transport in geological media
• You have basic knowledge of geosciences
• You speak and write good English (B2) and are a good communicator
• You have programming experience in a programming language such as C/C++, Matlab or Python or in script creation
We offer you an interesting and stimulating interdisciplinary work environment with high-grade technical resources in our research group at the scientific campus of Kiel University. Within the project, you will have the opportunity to independently and collaboratively contribute to a highly relevant, future-oriented technology for confronting climate change as a contribution to the energy transition. Your contributions will not only involve developing insights and methods but also making them available for practical applications. You will acquire state-of-the-art methods in the simulation of geothermal systems in the geological subsurface. The project also provides opportunities for intensive interdisciplinary exchange with the project partners, including participation in international events such as scientific workshops and conferences.
Kiel University considers itself a modern and cosmopolitan employer. We welcome your application regardless of age, gender, cultural and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, or sexual identity. We promote gender equality. The university strongly encourages women with appropriate qualifications to apply. Women with equivalent qualifications competence and expertise will be given preference.
Kiel University also supports the employment of disabled persons. Persons with disabilities will, with equivalent qualification and aptitudes, be employed preferentially.
We also support the application of people with a migration background.
For further information, please contact Professor Dr. Sebastian Bauer at the Institute of Geosciences, Kiel University.
Please submit your application by 8.02.2025, including a cover letter, CV, relevant certificates, and the names of two references, as one pdf-document via email using the subject “Application GeoDT“ to Prof. Dr. Sebastian Bauer (se*******.*****er@***.uni-kiel.de).
We would like to point out that applications containing only a CV are considered incomplete and may not be considered in the further procedure.
