    Within the Horizon Europe AquaINFRA project (https://aquainfra.eu) at IGB in Berlin, we are looking for a Postdoc to start as soon as possible.

    The oceans, seas, coastal, and inland water form a single system - the water cycle, which currently is under pressure like never before. Therefore, restoring and protecting our marine and inland waters is one of the urgent tasks of our time and addressed by the EU Mission Restore our oceans and waters by 2030. The overall objective of the AquaINFRA project is to develop a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) platform equipped with FAIR multi-disciplinary data and services to support marine and freshwater scientists and stakeholders restoring healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters.

    We seek an individual who is keen on transforming the European aquatic data and software landscape to support research communities. The vision is that researchers can analyse and host their data, software and workflows online while using available open-source tools. The AquaINFRA platform will be part of the larger architecture of the European Open Science Cloud (https://eosc.eu). The successful applicant is envisioned to conduct a case study where research and the contribution to the infrastructure go hand-in-hand.

    Your tasks

    • Developing generic analysis workflows within a given case study
    • Geospatial (big) data processing using open-source software (e.g., GDAL, GRASS GIS) and their integration to other programming languages in a cloud-optimized way
    • Communicating with and supporting researchers in project case studies across Europe
    • Preparing documentation and basic teaching material of the VRE
    • Contribution to the research group's R package "hydrographr" and the "Hydrography90m" and "GeoFRESH" databases, and porting their data and functionality to cloud-based workflows

    Your profile

    • You hold a completed academic degree in freshwater ecology, spatial ecology, geoinformatics (or equivalent) with a background in spatial freshwater biodiversity science
    • Essential is experience and interest in spatial freshwater biodiversity science
    • Essential is experience in open-source GIS programming, Open Science practices, and FAIR Data
    • Essential is an excellent knowledge in R at the level of package development and maintenance in Linux and Windows
    • Essential is a very good understanding of PostgreSQL. Knowledge of extensions, such as pgRouting, is an advantage
    • Essential is a strong knowledge of the Linux environment and experience in High-Performance-Computing and Big Data
    • Experience in OGC geospatial APIs, e.g. GeoServer, and geodata management, e.g. GeoNode is beneficial
    • The successful candidate is expected to have strong collaborative skills to foster collaboration with other research groups within the project, including excellent English communication and version control skills (git)
    • Experience in communicating software to end-users is beneficial

    Our offer

    Salary is paid according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (TVöD Bund). Depending on the personal qualifications and the tasks assigned, the position will be paid up to E13. It is a full-time position with 39 working hours per week. The position is principally suited for job sharing or part-time work with at least 30 h/week. The position is available until the end of 2026.
