Post-Doc*in Fluvial Hydrodynamics and Fish Movement (m/f/d)

Post-Doc position in Fluvial Hydrodynamics and Fish Movement (m/f/d)

Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), Berlin

Post-Doc position in Fluvial Hydrodynamics and Fish Movement (m/f/d)

For Dep. 1 of IGB in Berlin-Friedrichshagen at Lake Müggelsee we are inviting applications for the position of a post-doctoral researcher in fluvial hydrodynamics and fish movement starting on 01.01.2025.

This post-doctoral position is open within the DFG funded project “Confluence mixing: near field hydrodynamic controls of the intermodal behavior and their implications for fish ecology (CofeMix+)”. This research project aims at the improvement in knowledge of confluence mixing by providing fundamental theory-based insight into the effects of jetting, flow stagnation and river regulation on the intermodal behavior of mixing interfaces and their implications for fish ecology. Complex mixing interfaces generated in shallow, rough-bedded river environments will be assessed directly in the field at a wide range of hydrological conditions using remote sensing and instrumental measurements. Dynamics of mixing then will be understood by comparing field observations with the theory of intermodal behavior. Our experiments will also provide the information on fish trajectories and fish behavior within mixing interfaces. The experiments will be carried out on the Tagliamento River in Italy using the IGB research platform RIVER-LAB (https://youtu.be/Fe9KER33Pc4).

    Key responsibilities and duties

    • Planning, preparing and performing field-based experiments on river hydrodynamics, mixing processes and fish observations at the models of river confluences within the RIVER-LAB research platform.
    • Data post-processing, analysis and modeling of mixing processes. Post-processing of fish trajectories, analysis and modeling.
    • Writing and publishing scientific reports and papers from the results of the project.

    Requirements

    • Completed PhD degree in river sciences, fluvial hydrodynamics, hydraulics or fluvial ecology (mandatory).
    • Experience in carrying out field-based experimental research in fluvial hydrodynamics proven by published papers (mandatory).
    • Highly desirable expertise in using acoustic Doppler velocimentry and data-post processing with ExploreV software, expertise in topo-geodetical measurements, and visualization of flow in the field.
    • Desirable qualifications include post-processing of remotely sensed images using Grapher software.
    • Good knowledge of English (proven by first authorship in published papers), German (C1 is desirable), basics of Italian.
    • Ability to spend prolonged (up to 3-4 months) periods in the field, driving license B, experience with scientific video-making and photography.

    Our offer

We offer an interesting position in an international and dynamic scientific environment. We foster flat hierarchies and active participation. We allow maximum individual freedom, enabling everyone to develop and use their creativity to the best of their abilities.

Salary is paid according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (TVöD Bund). Depending on the personal qualifications and the tasks assigned, the position will be paid up to E13. It is a full-time position with 39 working hours per week. The position is principally also suited for part-time work. The position is offered for 3 years in the first instance.

We foster your career development by providing qualification and training opportunities. We actively support the reconciliation of work and family life. The IGB is committed to diversity.
