Iranian Archive is a project of Mnemonic, a non-profit organization which operates globally to help human rights defenders effectively use digital documentation of human rights violations and international crimes to support advocacy, justice, and accountability. In response to the social unrest in Iran, Mnemonic has established the Iranian Archive under its Rapid Response programme by building on the success of the Syrian, Yemeni, Sudanese and Ukrainian Archives.
We are human rights defenders, lawyers, archivists, technologists, and open-source investigators dedicated to preserving, memorialising and adding value to publicly available information related to human rights violations. About the Opportunity
Iranian Archive is a project supported by Iranian journalists, legal practitioners, the rapid response team and technical team at Mnemonic.
Our team preserves, analyses, and memorializes documentation of the social unrest in Iran. We archive relevant digital open source material and we analysethe archived materials in our database. Our mission is to support the work of investigative journalists, human rights defenders, and criminal justice practitioners who can utilise the archived open source information and build on the analysis we provide.
By preserving verifiable documentation in our archive and helping others do the same, we hope to support a challenging but important fact-finding process. For this purpose, we are looking for an Open-Source Researcher to join our team. The researcher will receive training on open source investigation while working on the project.
TASKS AND DELIVERABLES
The Open-Source Researcher will have the following responsibilities:
- Monitor the ongoing protests in Iran in collaboration with Iranian and International organisations;
- Identify, collect and archive at risk open-source materials and prepare content for verification and analysis;
- Verify archived materials to contribute to open-source investigations on allegations of violations of human rights, international humanitarian, and criminal law;
- Process and tag audio-visual content using Mnemonic’s Elfehrest annotation platform and protocols;
- Conduct open-source investigations and comprehensive analysis of the incidents;
- Develop and implement research plans with project manager to support global accountability efforts;
- Monitor and update the sources received for archiving;
- Perform other related duties, as required by project manager, program director, or managing director.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in Journalism, Law, Media and Communication, Political Science or related discipline and at least 3 years of relevant work experience;
- Experience in conducting open-source investigations;
- Experience in using digital verification tools;
- Fluency in oral and written English and Farsi;
- Excellent writing and editing skills for investigative reports;
- Strong knowledge of the Iranian context;
- Professional experience from Iranian or international human rights organizations is highly desirable;
- Based in Berlin is desirable;
- Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills are required to work collaboratively with the Rapid Response team and other researchers), legal and research team, technical team, and partners;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently is required;
- Being able to work under time pressure is required.

- A part-time consultancy position of for 16 expert days per month;
- Starting date is as soon as possible for a limited term of 9 months from the starting date. With possibility of extension to additional 12 months, subject to availability of funding and satisfactory performance;
