Masterarbeit - Laserprozessoptimierung für die Realisierung einer plastikfreien Verkapselungsmethode

Master Thesis - Laser process optimization for the realization of a plastic-free encapsulation method

At Institute of Energy Materials and Devices - Photovoltaics (IMD-3), among other research topics we are working on innovative module concepts for the future of photovoltaic modules. These module concepts need to fit the requirements of a circular economy, where the recycling at the end of life of a photovoltaic module is essential (D4R, Design for Recycling). As part of this master’s thesis, a laser process will be optimized to contribute to the development of a “plastic-free” encapsulation method. In this process, glass and metal are welded together using a fs-laser. The goal is to encapsulate a single Si wafer respectively a single Si solar cell between two glass substrates using this welding process. The quality of the encapsulation in terms of moisture ingress prevention will be assessed through Damp-Heat tests and qualitative lifetime measurements.

    Your Job:

    • Literature research on /Familiarization with the topic of laser welding of glass and metal
    • Familiarization with the laser system
    • Qualitative measurement of the lifetime of charge carriers in processed Si wafers/solar cells
    • Optimization of the laser process for joining glass with metal
    • Glass-to-glass encapsulation of a wafer/solar cell using the glass-metal joining process
    • Verification of the encapsulation quality using Damp-Heat tests (moisture ingress) and lifetime measurements
    • Analysis and documentation of the results

    Your Profile:

    • Excellent academic performance in a master’s program in electrical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field
    • Basic knowledge of laser technology
    • Initial experience in optimizing laser processes and with an object-oriented programming language (e.g., Python, Matlab) is beneficial
    • Analytical and structured thinking
    • Fluent written and spoken English or German

    Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:

    • A highly motivated team and an international and interdisciplinary working environment at one of the largest research institutions in Europe
    • An interesting and socially relevant topic for your thesis with future-oriented themes
    • Ideal conditions for gaining practical experience alongside your studies
    • Excellent technical equipment and the newest technology
    • Continuous professional support from your scientific supervisor
    • The chance to independently prepare and work on your tasks
    • Flexible working hours as well as a reasonable remuneration
    • A large research campus with green spaces, offering the best possible means for networking with colleagues and pursuing sports alongside work
The position is initially for a fixed term of 6 months.
In addition to exciting tasks and a collaborative working atmosphere at Jülich, we have a lot more to offer: https://go.fzj.de/benefits
