    Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB), Bonn and Hamburg

    The Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) is one of the large, globally connected research museums of the Leibniz Association. In addition to excellent research on biodiversity and its change, we are advancing the further development of our extensive scientific collections with an international team and state-of-the-art technology. With our exhibition, knowledge transfer and communication work at our exhibition venues Museum Koenig Bonn and Museum der Natur Hamburg, we want to spread enthusiasm for nature and contribute with our research topics to current socio-political discussions on species loss, climate change and the protection of ecosystems. The construction of an integrated natural history museum is being planned for the Hamburg location; the research infrastructure at the Bonn location is currently being significantly expanded.

    Become part of our institute in Bonn. We are looking for a

    Junior researcher/ PhD Student (f/m/d)

    in the project GoodWeedBadWeed
    to start at the next possible date. The position is limited to 3 years as 65% of a full position (approx. 25.87 hours/week), in accordance with the relevant part-time and fixed-term laws. The work location is split between Göttingen (3/4 year) and Bonn (1/4 year).
    GoodWeedBadWeed is a joint project of the Centre for Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation Science (zbm) at the LIB, with project partners at the Department of Crop Sciences of the University of Göttingen and the technology start-up Pheno-Inspect GmbH. The projects aims to advance understanding of the ecological value and cost-benefit trade-offs of segetal plant species (weeds in arable fields). This knowledge will help improve sustainable farming practices for the preservation of biodiversity.

    Your Tasks include:

    • Conduct field experiments with project partners at the University of Göttingen research farms
    • Study plant-pollinator interactions of weeds using metabarcoding (eDNA) and analysis of nectar and pollen
    • Develop a decision index based on novel technologies for initiating threshold-triggered weed-control measures in state-of-the-art farming systems
    • Statistical analyses and publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals

    Your profile:

    • Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Biology or other disciplines with focus on ecology or entomology; Agricultural Sciences with focus on crop sciences or related subjects
    • Interest in wild plants and agro-ecological practices
    • Willingness to conduct field work over several months near Göttingen, Germany (position location is split between Göttingen and Bonn)
    • Willingness to acquire necessary knowledge and skills in molecular (metabarcoding) and biochemical (nectar, pollen) methods
    • Self-organized and independent way of working
    • Ability to work in teams
    • EU driver’s license (cat. B)
