Remuneration is paid in accordance with the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L, Public Sector Collective Agreement of the States) salary scale at level TV-L EG 14.

The position is to be filled with at least 30 working hours per week. A further temporary reduction in working hours, e.g. to take care of family responsibilities, is possible.

Who are we?

The IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance are very important. Our research focus is on the coastal and marginal seas, especially the Baltic Sea. The staff of the five departments Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography, Marine Geology and Marine Observations work interdisciplinary within a joint research programme.

A new focus in shallow water research is devoted to interdisciplinary physical processes, material turnover, sediment transport and biology in water depths of less than 15 m. The area is being investigated both in-situ and with laboratory work and with modelling and remote sensing. The results will contribute to an improved overall understanding of the Baltic Sea system and its land ocean interactions.

What will be your tasks?

You will be part of the collegial management team of the newly established Marine Observation Department, which will be headed by a dual leadership team. This new department consists of three working groups: Measurement Technology and Methods, Mechanical Workshop and the Integrated Optical Remote Sensing research group. You will also provide important impetus for research into coastal seas and the interaction between land and sea.

Your tasks will cover two central areas in particular:

Firstly, you will take on tasks as an equal co-lead of the Marine Observation Department. This includes leading the department with its three working groups and developing innovative measurement methods for marine observation. In addition, you will support all marine science disciplines at IOW and contribute to interdisciplinary cooperation. Depending on the focus, the service character of the department will be highlighted.

Secondly, you will devote yourself to coordinating and supporting innovative methods of marine observation, in particular with regard to the newly established research focus on shallow water processes. This includes close coordination with the management of this research focus and active participation in scientific discussions and field measurements. Together with an already established team, you will develop and optimize measurement technology for shallow water areas. The aim is to strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation in the research area and to enable new research approaches. Your developments should not only advance research, but also be highlighted in scientific publications.

What do we expect from you?

You have a scientific background in marine sciences and a university degree (Master/Diploma) and a doctorate in oceanography, marine measurement technology or a related discipline. Deep knowledge in the areas of in-situ measurements is expected. Experience in handling autonomous measurement systems is welcome. A particular interest in working in coastal seas, especially in shallow water zones is required. Experience in leading teams or working groups, in project management, working in international scientific networks, as well as in coordination and communication across disciplines, is desirable. You have the ability to promote equality and equal opportunities in your area of ​​responsibility. We will support you in the advancement of these skills. German and English language skills, including excellent written and oral expression skills in various formats, are required as well as the willingness to travel internationally and work at sea. Experience in leading scientific expeditions and in the successful planning, implementation and evaluation of research campaigns in aquatic systems is beneficial. In addition, we expect a strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and the ability to work in a team.
