Research Assistant in the field of energy infrastructure

The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG conducts research at eight locations in the fields of integrated energy infrastructures, geothermal energy and sector coupling for a successful energy transition. Our research institute conducts applied research, develops innovative technologies for public and industrial clients and translates these into marketable products and processes.
Our Hydrogen, Natural Gas and Materials Infrastructures research team is working on a number of projects that focus on assessing the future needs for climate-neutral infrastructures. How might hydrogen and carbon dioxide infrastructures be implemented and what are the system implications? What are the pipeline infrastructure requirements and how fast can they be scaled up? We are looking for enthusiastic Masters students who want to join us in tackling energy system problems and driving the energy transition forward. We are looking for you at our location in Cottbus.
What you will do
- Literature research on topics such as the energy transition path for the cement industry and the development of CO2 infrastructure.
- Preparation of geospatial data on energy infrastructure.
- Supporting energy system modeling activities with focus on hydrogen and carbon dioxide transport infrastructure.
- Analysis and visualisation of complex supply chains in the Northwest European region.
- Collaboration in the publication of peer-reviewed articles.
What you bring to the table
- Enrolled in a Master's programme in science, engineering, physics, economics, mathematics, computer science or a related field.
- Understanding of energy economics, energy system modeling, hydrogen production value chain and data analysis
- Experience with QGIS/ArcGIS and Python, especially in areas such as data management and optimisation (PyPSA model framework is a strong advantage)
- Independent, structured, and dedicated working style.
- Good written and spoken German and English (at least B2)
