Project-/ Thesis - Fabrication methods, applications and benchmark of SOFTROBOTIK
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.
The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Additive Production Technologies IAPT from Hamburg is one of the leading institutions for the industrialization of additive manufacturing (AM). With a focus on the application of additive technologies, sustainable innovations are created along the entire process chain. These range from developments at process and material level to the development of novel component designs as well as system technologies to factory planning and digitalization. A significant role of industrialized AM technologies is represented by powder-based 3D printing processes. The powder-based process chain includes, among other steps, downstream de-powdering and cleaning procedures, which, at the current stage of development, are carried out either manually or by costly cleaning machines.
By employing flexibly applicable industrial robots, the automation costs of these process steps can be reduced.
Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate and practically develop a robot-based cleaning process. The necessary automation technology is available at the institute in Hamburg for this purpose.
What you will do
- Research on powder-based AM processes, de-powdering solutions, and robot-based automation technology
- Methodical development of influencing factors for the de-powdering quality
- Iterative development (hardware and software) of a robot-based de-powdering process
- Systematic experimental planning, execution, and evaluation of the de-powdering process
What you bring to the table
- Ongoing academic studies (Bachelor's or Master's) in the field of engineering or a related field of study
- Interest in the latest trends, opportunities and risks in the field of 3D printing
- Ideally first experience with additive manufacturing processes
- Ability to work in a team, independent and self-organized
- Creativity and curiosity
- Confident knowledge of German and English, both written and spoken
What you can expect
- Preparation of an industrially and scientifically relevant thesis at the interface between research and industry
- Collaboration in an innovative and dynamic team with diverse research topics
- Relevant practical experience at the interface between research and industry
- Scope to implement innovative ideas
- State-of-the-art and extensive equipment
- Flexible working hours with practical work on site in Hamburg Bergedorf and the option to work remotely
- Personal supervision and support when working on tasks
No remuneration is paid by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
