The Helmholtz Institute Jena (HI Jena) is an institute of the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy lon Research GmbH in Darmstadt at the campus of the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena. The institute is mainly focused on fundamental and applied research at the borderline of strong-field physics, relativistic light-matter interactions and fundamental quantum processes.
For doctoral research projects the institute is constantly seeking candidates to fill the position of a
Doctoral scientist (all genders)
For a doctoral position at the Helmholtz Institute Jena candidates are invited to take an active role in one of the experimental or theoretical research areas of the Institute:
- High-power laser systems;
- Novel laser-based accelerator concepts;
- X-ray spectroscopy;
- Strong-field quantum electrodynamics;
- Physics of hot dense plasmas.
Basic Requirements
- Master or Diploma degree in physics;
- Strong interest and good fundamental knowledge of the relevant research field of the HI Jena;
- Excellent team working, communication and presentation skills;
- Good English language skills.
- Further detailed qualifications will be reviewed by the board of the Research School of the HI Jena in the course of the application.

We offer
Positions as a doctoral researcher are regularly awarded for a duration of 3 years with the possibility of maximum prolongation by one additional year. Salary is paid according to the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD Bund) on a 65% level. The task is a fulltime position. According to the Helmholtz Doctoral Guidelines, doctoral researchers of the HI Jena are provided with a structured supervision concept and doctoral training by the Research School of Advanced Photon Science (RS-APS) of the HI Jena in cooperation with the Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and lon Research (HGS-HIRe) at GSI.
