We are pleased to announce an immediate opening for a highly dedicated and motivated Researcher to support the work of our passenger cars and heavy-duty vehicle, teams in Europe. A focus of the position will be on the EU CO2 emission standards as well as the UK Zero Emission Vehicle standards for new vehicles, the topic of energy efficiency for electric vehicles, the real-world gap of fuel and energy consumption values for conventional combustion engine vehicles, hybrids, as well as battery electric vehicles.
The position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of academic research and policymaking, by carrying out profound research and modeling, deriving concrete policy recommendations, and communicating actionable findings to regulators, the media, as well as a variety of stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will bring knowledge of vehicle technology, the transportation sector and environmental or energy topics, strong analytical skills, fluency in both written and spoken English, strong written and verbal communication skills, and a demonstrated interest in addressing our most urgent global health and environmental challenges.
Note: Most European jobs can be based in either our Berlin office or anywhere in Germany or Sweden.
You will:
- Analyze data on electric vehicle uptake, CO2 emission levels of new vehicles, type-approval as well as real-world driving fuel and energy consumption levels.
- Analyze and summarize regulations and draft policy texts.
- Write clear and concise technical reports, policy briefs, and articles including informative but easy to understand figures to summarize ICCT’s research for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Collaborate effectively with the ICCT team in Europe and worldwide, as well as outside partners and stakeholders.
You have:

A master’s degree in engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, energy and resources, or another relevant subject, in addition to at least three years of related experience.

A technical understanding of combustion engine and electric vehicle technology.

An understanding and interest in air quality, climate change, and transportation emissions, including vehicle and fuel regulations.

Excellent research, analytical, and quantitative skills, with strong written and verbal communication skills and high emotional intelligence.

Excellent proficiency in data analysis, including advanced skills in programming (R) (required); experience in vehicle modeling (desirable).

The ability to work independently with limited supervision, being highly organized, self-directed, creative, and strategic in problem-solving.

Fluency in English (required), plus other European languages (desired).

Availability for occasional national and international travel.
What we offer:
This position is based in Europe. Our preference is for the candidate to work out of our office in the heart of Berlin, Germany. However, following an initial orientation training, we also provide the opportunity for the candidate to work from anywhere else within Germany or Sweden, with the requirement to regularly visit the Berlin office. This position offers an annual starting salary of about 80,000 Euro (40 hours/week, if working from Germany), depending on your level of experience. We offer an initial 2-year contract, with the possibility of extension depending on organizational resources and performance.
