Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW), Warnemünde
Job advertisement (Dir 08/2024)
The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is seeking to fill a temporary position from 01.04.2025 until 31.12.2029 as
Co-Head of the International Baltic Earth Secretariat (m, f, d)
with a job share of 100% (40h/week). The remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L) in pay group 13. The position can be performed part-time, but at least 70 % of the time.
Who are we?
The IOW is an independent research institute in the Leibniz Association, for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and the compatibility of career and family are of great importance. Our research focuses on the coastal and marginal seas, especially the Baltic Sea. The staff of the five scientific departments of Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography, Marine Geology and Marine Observation work on an interdisciplinary basis in a joint research programme. The position is located in the Science Management Department of the IOW Directorate.
What are your tasks?
You will be co-responsible for the International Baltic Earth Secretariat (IBES). Baltic Earth is an independent network of researchers endeavouring to better understand the Earth system of the Baltic Sea region. It provides a basis for science-based management of the impacts of climate change, environmental change and human activities in the region. Baltic Earth brings together a broad international research community to address key scientific challenges that are considered fundamental to societal endeavours towards sustainability in the region.
From 2025, the new IBES will be based at two research institutes, the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) and the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IOPAN), as the central contact point for Baltic Earth. Together with a colleague at IOPAN, you will lead the IBES. Your tasks will be:
- Support the Baltic Earth network and maintain links with all participating research groups and other international institutes and organisations relevant to Baltic Earth,
- To prepare, organise/co-organise and participate in international Baltic Earth events (workshops, bi-annual Baltic Earth conferences, summer and winter schools, etc.),
- Providing reports to international research groups such as GEWEX (GHP) and CORDEX in which Baltic Earth is actively involved,
- Writing, editing and contributing to selected publications or collections of publications such as the BEARs,
- organising regular meetings of the Baltic Earth Science Steering Group and the Senior Advisory Board,
- Information and communication with stakeholders such as HELCOM,
- Operating and maintaining the content of the Baltic Earth website: https://baltic.earth
What do we expect from you?
You have a scientific background in geosciences, preferably in the Baltic Sea region, as well as a university degree (Master's/Diploma) and a PhD in meteorology, oceanography, hydrology or a related natural or geoscientific discipline. Interest in or experience with project management, international scientific networks, coordination and communication are desirable, as are strong teamwork skills. Willingness to share the management of the secretariat with a colleague at IOPAN is expected. English language skills, including excellent written expression in various formats, are required, as is a willingness to travel extensively internationally.
Other favourable qualifications are:
-
a record of scientific and non-scientific publications, especially scientific review articles,
-
experience with various (new and traditional) media,
-
experience in liaising with stakeholders,
-
experience in organising international scientific workshops, projects, conferences and educational events such as summer/winter schools,
-
Experience with peer review or editorial activities, especially of scientific special issues
What does the IOW offer?
The IOW offers you a varied workplace in the immediate vicinity of the Baltic Sea (working by the sea) with flexible working models, e.g. the possibility to work partly from home or remotely. A very good infrastructure with modern laboratory and office equipment, including on our own research vessel, provides the framework for the best working conditions. In connection with business-related travelling, the IOW supports the assumption of care responsibilities within the scope of legal possibilities.
How do we promote equal opportunities?
Our job offers are aimed at all people, regardless of their gender. Research benefits from a diverse working environment, which is why we have signed the Diversity Charter.
The IOW has set itself the goal of specifically promoting women in areas where they are underrepresented. To this end, the institute has adopted an equal opportunities plan (Plan for the Equal Opportunities Committee at the IOW) and has repeatedly been recognised for its commitment with the Total E-Quality award. Female applicants with equal qualifications and suitability are given preferential consideration. An overview of our measures for equal opportunities and for improving the compatibility of work and family life can be found on our website.
We give preference to applications from people with disabilities with the same professional and personal qualifications. Please mention the disability or equal status in your letter of application and enclose a copy of the relevant certificate.
How do you apply?
Please send us your application documents including cover letter, CV, copies of your certificates, description of relevant activities and experience as well as references.
