“Research for a life without cancer" is our mission at the German Cancer Research Center. We investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors and look for new cancer prevention strategies. We develop new methods with which tumors can be diagnosed more precisely and cancer patients can be treated more successfully. Every contribution counts – whether in research, administration or infrastructure. This is what makes our daily work so meaningful and exciting.

The Single-cell Open Lab at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) is offering a position for a bioinformation to support the analysis of spatial omics data as part of Multispace within the Health and Life Science Alliance Heidelberg-Mannheim (https://www.health-life-sciences.de/multispace/).

Our lab provides lab infrastructure to facilitate both single-cell and spatial omics projects. We work closely with the very active research community in Heidelberg on a variety of research questions. Specifically, we aim to support multi-omics workflows, such as combing spatial transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, by collaborating with other core labs across the campus. Integration of diverse datasets from the same or consecutive tissue sections will be crucial to build comprehensive molecular maps.

    Your Tasks

We are looking for a research scientist to

    (i) conduct the bioinformatical analysis of these data, especially for benchmarking new instruments and technology advancements,
(ii) build transferable analysis frameworks and data sharing schemes,
(iii) support and educate users in running these,
and (iv) actively contribute to ongoing initiatives such as iofast for FAIR spatial data.

Thus, we are looking for someone with strong computational skills who wants to work in an interdisciplinary team and is willing to learn what is needed on the biology side. The candidate will have the possibility to further shape the theoretical spatial omics work of the lab in an inspiring environment.

    Your Profile

    • Master's and PhD degree in systems / quantitative biology, physics, mathematics or computer science
    • Ability to independently solve complex scientific / technical problems
    • Programming skills (e.g. R and Python)
    • Experience in complex image analysis, preferably in the field of spatial transcriptomics and proteomics
    • Knowledge in system administration is a plus
    • Interest in molecular oncology
    • Self-motivated and capable to communicate results in an interdisciplinary team
    • Proficiency in English
